This was my grandfather's favorite cookie recipe and has become a family tradition.

Ingredients

Original recipe (1X) yields 72 servings

  • 1 cup shortening

  • 1 cup butter, softened

  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar

  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

  • 1 tablespoon almond extract

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour

  • teaspoon salt

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).

  2. Cream shortening, butter, and confectioners' sugar in a medium bowl until smooth. Stir in vanilla and almond extracts. Combine flour and salt in a separate bowl; stir into creamed mixture.

  3. Roll dough into walnut-sized balls and place 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets.

  4. Bake in the preheated oven until bottoms begin to brown, 20 to 25 minutes.
