This is my version of all day apple butter using more apples, less sugar, and a wider range of spices. It earned me a permanent supply of free apples from my local farmer friend, and I promise it will make you some new friends too!

Ingredients

Original recipe (1X) yields 32 servings

  • 10 pounds apples - peeled, cored, and chopped

  • ½ cup white sugar

  • 4 teaspoons ground cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves

  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice

  • ¾ teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ cup sugar-free butter-flavored syrup

  • ¼ cup honey

  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup

  • 1 tablespoon Mexican vanilla extract

  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice

  • ½ teaspoon molasses

Directions

  1. Place apples in a slow cooker. Sprinkle with sugar, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, nutmeg, and salt. Cover and cook on High for 2 hours.

  2. Stir butter-flavored syrup, honey, maple syrup, vanilla extract, lemon juice, and molasses into the apple mixture; mash apples with a potato masher or fork.

  3. Reduce heat to Low, cover, and continue cooking apple mixture until thickened and dark brown, 9 to 11 hours, whisking frequently. Remove cover and cook for 1 to 2 more hours.
