Candied Sweet Potatoes with Maple Syrup

I created this candied sweet potatoes with maple syrup recipe to entice my young children to eat sweet potatoes. They didn't like them plain, and none of us liked recipes using marshmallows, pineapples, etc. This slightly sweet version fits the bill. The kids are all grown up now, but they still request this for Thanksgiving.

Ingredients

Original recipe (1X) yields 8 servings

  • 2 ½ pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed

  • butter-flavored cooking spray

  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • ½ teaspoon ground allspice

  • ¼ cup pure maple syrup

  • 3 tablespoons salted butter, melted

Directions

  1. Place sweet potatoes in a large pot and cover with salted water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until tender, 15 to 20 minutes.

  2. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Coat an 8-inch square baking pan with cooking spray.

  3. Combine cinnamon, salt, black pepper, nutmeg, and allspice in a small bowl. Combine maple syrup and melted butter in a separate small bowl.

  4. Drain sweet potatoes and transfer to a bowl; mash thoroughly. Add cinnamon mixture; stir until well distributed. Transfer potatoes to the prepared baking pan. Drizzle maple syrup mixture over top.

  5. Bake in the preheated oven until heated through, 5 to 10 minutes.

Cook’s Note

As a shortcut, you can substitute frozen, cooked sweet potatoes for uncooked. You can also leave the sweet potatoes cubed, toss them with the cinnamon spice mixture, then drizzle with the maple syrup mixture. We've done it both ways, but our family prefers them mashed.
