Ingredients

Original recipe (1X) yields 18 servings

  • 1 ½ cups white sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 cup milk

  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 cup hot water

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup butter

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

  2. Cream butter and sugar together in a large bowl. Add vanilla, then eggs to mixture.

  3. Mix together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl. Sour milk by adding lemon juice. Add flour mixture alternately with soured milk to creamed mixture.

  4. Mix cocoa powder and hot water together in a small bowl, then beat into batter. Transfer batter to the prepared dish.

  5. Bake in the preheated oven until an inserted toothpick comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes. Cool and frost with desired frosting.
