This sauce is an old standby for my Sunday dinners at home. It's great for pasta, spaghetti, pizzas (pictured), lasagna and baked meatballs among other things. This recipe should be enough for a family of 4 with some leftover to freeze.

Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp. olive oil
- 1 small onion
- 5 clove garlic
- 2 tsp. dried oregano
- 2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. Black pepper
- 1 tsp. chili flakes
- 1 small can tomato paste
- 1/4 c. red wine vinegar
- 1 can crushed tomatoes (or fresh if in season) (if available, san marzano are best)
- 1 c. water
- 1/4 c. Extra virgin olive oil
- 5 fresh basil leaves
Directions
- Step 1Heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the onions, garlic, and oregano until soft, about 3 to 4 minutes. Add salt, pepper, chili flakes, tomato paste, and red wine vinegar and cook 3 more minutes.
- Step 2Add tomatoes and water and let simmer for at least 45 minutes on low heat. Finish sauce with the extra virgin olive oil and fresh basil.
