Serve this sweet and sour dipping sauce with chicken nuggets and rice for an easy lunch or dinner that tastes just like takeout! This recipe is very forgiving and allows for substitutions. It makes enough for four kids, double it up for a family dinner. You can substitute a can of orange soda for the pineapple juice.

Ingredients

Original recipe (1X) yields 4 servings

  • 1 (8 ounce) can pineapple, drained and juice reserved

  • 1 cup white sugar

  • ½ cup ketchup

  • ¼ cup white vinegar or apple cider vinegar

  • ½ cup water

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

  • 2 medium carrots, chopped (Optional)

Directions

  1. Stir reserved pineapple juice, sugar, ketchup, and vinegar in a saucepan over medium heat until blended, 2 to 3 minutes.

  2. Whisk water and cornstarch in a bowl until cornstarch is dissolved; stir into pineapple juice mixture.

  3. Stir pineapple and carrots into the sauce; bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook at a simmer until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
