Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Make the cookie dough layers: Cream the butter and sugars in a large mixing bowl, beating until they're pale yellow and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Mix in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla, stirring to combine.

Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a separate mixing bowl. Slowly mix the dry ingredients into the butter-sugar mixture. Fold in the chocolate chips. Set aside.

Make cheesecake filling: In a small bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar and egg until smooth. Set aside.

Press half of the cookie dough into a well-greased 8- or 9-inch square pan. (Dust your fingers with flour to keep the dough from sticking to your hands.) Spread cheesecake filling over dough. Crumble and sprinkle remaining half of dough over cheesecake layer.

Bake 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown and firm to the touch. Cool 30 minutes. Refrigerate 2 hours or until chilled. Cut into bars and serve.
