1. Olive oil, or as needed - 1 tablespoon
2. Onion, chopped - 1 large
3. Garlic, crushed - 2 cloves
4. Red pepper flakes, or to taste - 1 pinch
5. Ground black pepper, or to taste - 1 pinch
6. Bulk hot Italian sausage, removed from casings and crumbled - 1 pound
7. Chopped fresh basil - ½ teaspoon
8. Smoked paprika (Optional) - ¼ teaspoon
9. Low-sodium chicken broth - 6 cups
10. Chopped kale - 4 cups
11. Cannellini beans, drained and rinsed - 1 (15 ounce) can
12. Peeled and chopped yellow potatoes, or more to taste - 1 cup

1. Stage

Heat oil in a large stockpot over medium heat until the oil shimmers; cook and stir onion, garlic, red pepper flakes, and black pepper until onion is translucent, 10 to 15 minutes.

Mix sausage, basil, and paprika together in a bowl.
