1. Boneless, skinless salmon, drained - 2 (6 ounce) cans
2. Egg, beaten - 1 large
3. Chopped onion, or more to taste - 2 tablespoons
4. Quick-cooking oats, or as needed - ¾ cup
5. Canola oil, or to taste - 2 tablespoons
6. Butter - 1 tablespoon
7. Salt and ground black pepper to taste - 1 tablespoon

1. Stage

Mix salmon, egg, and onion in a bowl with your hands until well combined. Mix in oats, a little at a time, until mixture holds together and is not overly moist. Shape into four patties.

Heat oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat until butter is melted and mixture is hot. Add patties and fry until golden brown on the outside and heated through, about 7 minutes per side.
