5. Dried split peas, rinsed - 1 pound
6. Ham, diced - 1 pound
7. Bay leaf - 1
8. Chicken stock - 1 quart
9. Water - 2 ½ cups
10. Salt and ground black pepper to taste - 2 ½ cups

1. Stage

Melt butter in a large soup pot over medium-low heat. Stir in celery, onion, and sliced garlic; cook and stir until onions are translucent but not brown, 5 to 8 minutes.
