1. 1 cup chopped dates -
2. 1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda, divided -
3. 1-1/2 cups boiling water -
4. 3/4 cup shortening -
5. 1-1/2 cups sugar, divided -
6. 1 large egg -
7. 2 cups all-purpose flour -
8. 1/2 teaspoon salt -
9. 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips -
10. 1/2 cup chopped pecans -

How to cook deliciously - Date Cake

1. Stage

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Fill a medium saucepan 2/3 full of water, then heat the water to boiling. Mix the dates and 1 teaspoon of the baking soda in a large bowl. Once the water is boiling, stir in the combined dates and baking soda. Let cool completely.

In another large bowl, cream together the shortening and 1 cup of sugar. (You'll save the remaining 1/2 cup of sugar for later.) Beat in the egg. Combine the flour, salt and the remaining baking soda, then add this dry mixture it to the creamed mixture, alternating with the date mixture.

Pour the batter into a greased 13x9-inch baking pan and sprinkle the remaining sugar on top, followed by the chocolate chips and nuts. Bake the cake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool on a wire rack before serving.
