3. Dried black-eyed peas, sorted and rinsed - 1 pound
4. Diced ham - 8 ounces
5. Bacon, chopped - 4 slices
6. Onion, diced - 1
7. Red bell pepper, stemmed, seeded, and diced - 1
8. Jalapeno chile, seeded and minced - 1
9. Garlic, diced - 2 cloves
10. Cumin - 1 ½ teaspoons
11. Ground black pepper - 1 teaspoon
12. Cayenne pepper - ½ teaspoon
13. Salt, to taste - ½ teaspoon
