1. Chopped fresh tomatoes - 4 cups
2. Onion - 1 slice
3. Garlic - 4 cloves
4. Chicken broth - 2 cups
5. Butter - 2 tablespoons
6. All-purpose flour - 2 tablespoons
7. Salt - 1 teaspoon
8. White sugar, or to taste - 2 teaspoons

Remove from heat and run the mixture through a food mill into a large bowl, or pan. Discard any stuff left over in the food mill. Dotdash Meredith Food Studios

In the now empty stockpot, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to make a roux, cooking until the roux is a medium brown. Dotdash Meredith Food Studios
