1. Active dry yeast - 1 (.25 ounce) package
2. Warm water - ¼ cup
3. Milk, scalded - 1 cup
4. Shortening - ¼ cup
5. White sugar - ¼ cup
6. Salt - 1 teaspoon
7. Mashed potatoes - ¾ cup
8. Eggs, beaten - 2 large
9. All-purpose flour, or more as needed - 4 cups
10. Powdered sugar - 1 (16 ounce) package
11. Water - 6 tablespoons
12. Vanilla extract - 1 tablespoon
13. Oil for frying, or as needed - 2 cups

Dissolve yeast in warm water.

Meanwhile, combine scalded milk, shortening, sugar, and salt in another bowl. Cool until lukewarm, about 5 minutes.

Stir yeast mixture, mashed potatoes, and eggs into the milk mixture. Gradually add enough flour to make a soft dough.
