3. Low-sodium chicken broth - 4 cups
4. Cooked ham, cut into 1-inch cubes - ½ pound

7. Garlic, minced - 2 cloves
8. Ground black pepper - ½ teaspoon
9. Salt to taste - ½ teaspoon

1. Stage

Place split peas into a large container and cover with 6 cups cool water; soak 8 hours to overnight. Drain and rinse.
